Architectural shingles are built from multiple laminated layers, giving a dimensional profile with real depth and shadow; three-tab shingles are a single flat layer with a uniform pattern. The laminated construction is heavier and carries higher wind and impact ratings, which is why architectural shingles have become the standard on replacement roofs. Three-tab is now mostly seen on older roofs coming off.
Impact-resistant shingles are graded under UL 2218, where Class 4 is the highest rating — awarded when a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet leaves no crack on the back of the shingle. Malarkey’s Vista and Legacy lines both carry Class 4. Along the Wasatch Front, where hail and wind-driven debris cause most sudden shingle damage, the upgrade is worth pricing out rather than dismissing. Malarkey notes Class 4 roofs often qualify for an insurance discount; your agent can confirm whether yours does.
Longer on some slopes than others, which is why a roof rarely fails evenly. South- and west-facing slopes take the most UV and age fastest; north slopes hold moisture and grow algae. Attic ventilation matters as much as the shingle itself, because trapped heat cooks a roof from underneath. Rather than quote a number, we look at granule loss, sealant condition and how the slopes are ageing relative to each other.
The shingle line is only part of it. Square footage, roof pitch, the number of existing layers coming off, and the condition of the decking underneath all move the number, and upgrading from a standard architectural shingle to an impact-resistant one changes the material cost but not the labour. Because deck condition isn’t visible until the old roof is off, we quote on site, in writing, at no cost.
Only some lines do, and the difference matters. Malarkey’s Legacy Scotchgard shingles include 3M Scotchgard Protector and carry a limited lifetime warranty against blue-green algae — specifically Gloeocapsa magma, the organism responsible for black streaking. Other biological growth is excluded. Malarkey’s Vista line carries no algae warranty. If streaking is a concern on your roof, that distinction decides which line to specify.
Malarkey’s Legacy Scotchgard shingles are rated ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H. The two standards measure different things: D3161 is a fan-induced test, while D7158 calculates the actual uplift force wind exerts and accounts for building height and exposure, which makes it the more meaningful of the two. Class H is the highest classification under D7158.
Because a test rating and a warranty are different things. Malarkey’s limited wind warranty is 110 mph as standard, and rises to 130 mph when the shingles are installed alongside other Malarkey components — starter, ridge and underlayment from the same system. Mixing brands across the assembly is the most common reason a homeowner ends up with the lower figure without realising it. Ask any contractor which number your quote actually buys.
Yes, and more than most people expect. Malarkey’s instructions require approved corrosion-resistant nails and do not permit staples. Slopes between 2:12 and 4:12 require a double layer of underlayment, and slopes above 21:12 require six nails per shingle plus hand-sealing underneath. Miss any of those and the manufacturer can decline a claim — which is what certified installation is actually protecting.
